What is genre and why are genre conventions important?

What is genre?

Genre is a style or category of art, music or literature.

Why are genre conventions important?

Genre is a way of grouping different films into categories, without having genres it would be impossible to categorize these films eg. horror or romance. By having genres it makes it easier for marketing and producing companies. It is also important for the audience as this will give them an idea about what they're expecting and whether there going to like it or not. Also without a film having mise - en- scene, camera angles, characters, sounds or enigma codes all of this wouldn't contribute to the overall genre/ theme of the film and would leave the audience feeling confused and unsatisfied.
